The Ki-61's Daimler-Benz derived engine gave it a very un-Japanese appearance that confused Allied intelligence — initially misidentified as a Bf 109 or Italian Macchi. The Hien proved itself a capable interceptor against B-29s over Japan in the war's final year, and its elegant slim fuselage makes it one of the most distinctive Japanese aircraft of the Pacific War.
