The BR50 was developed from 1937 as a powerful standardised steam locomotive designed for hauling freight trains on branch and secondary railway lines. With more than 3,100 examples produced between 1938 and 1945, it became one of the most widely used steam locomotive classes in Germany, valued for its versatility and relatively low axle load. During the later years of production, wartime simplifications led to the development of the BR50 UK (Umbau Kriegslokomotive) variant.
