The Panzer IV was the backbone of German armoured divisions throughout the Second World War and, with over 8,500 built, remained in production longer than any other German tank. The Ausf. H mid-production version mounted the long 7.5cm KwK 40 L/48 gun capable of defeating most Allied tanks at combat range, and typically carried side skirts (Schürzen) and turret-mounted spaced armour to counter Soviet anti-tank rifles.
