About this kit
USS Long Beach (CGN-9) was the world's first nuclear-powered surface combatant, commissioned in 1961 with a striking box-like superstructure built around the pioneering SCANFAR phased-array radar system; armed originally with Talos and Terrier missiles, she famously downed two MiGs over Vietnam using Talos missiles in 1968 before a later modernisation added Standard missiles, Harpoon and Tomahawk.
Dragon's 1/700 kit is prized for capturing Long Beach's one-of-a-kind silhouette, with finely moulded radar faces, missile launchers and the unmistakable flat-sided bridge structure rendered in crisp slide-moulded detail.
The kit includes a decal sheet for hull markings and a display stand, allowing a full-hull or waterline build of this unique Cold War cruiser.
An essential subject for collectors of pioneering nuclear-powered warships and unusual Cold War cruiser designs.
