The Panzer IV Ausf.D was an early production model of Germany's most numerous tank of the war, armed with the short 7.5cm KwK37 L/24 gun for infantry support. "Vorpanzer" refers to the additional bolted-on applique front armour plates fitted to many Ausf.D hulls and superstructures from 1940 onward, a field and factory upgrade intended to improve protection against contemporary Allied anti-tank guns during the early campaigns in France and the opening phase of Operation Barbarossa.

Dragon's kit reproduces the riveted Ausf.D hull and boxy driver's visor housing distinct to this early mark, together with the applique armour plates, individual track links and the twin-hatch cupola of the period. The kit captures the transitional look of the Panzer IV before the later, more heavily revised marks introduced sloped and welded construction.
