About this kit
The Sd.Kfz. 253 was a purpose-built armoured observation vehicle developed on the Sd.Kfz. 250 light half-track chassis, created specifically to accompany Sturmartillerie (StuG III assault gun) batteries into action. Unlike the open-topped personnel carriers in the Sd.Kfz. 250 family, the 253 featured a low, fully enclosed armoured superstructure that gave its forward observer crew protection while they spotted targets and relayed fire-control data back to the guns. This Dragon release depicts the type fitted with a Panzer I turret, an unusual field-style armament upgrade that reflects the improvised solutions German units often applied to lightly armed support vehicles as the war progressed.
Dragon's engineering brings its trademark slide-mould technology to the model, reproducing the compound curves of the 253's distinctive sloped hull and the compact turret with crisp, finely scaled detail. The kit captures the vehicle's interlocking road wheel and torsion-bar suspension arrangement shared with the wider Sd.Kfz. 250 family, along with the observation ports, aerial mounts and stowage fittings that marked out this specialist support vehicle from its gun-carrying half-track relatives.
As with other Dragon 1/35 releases, the kit includes a full sprue of crisply moulded plastic parts, a decal sheet for markings and unit insignia, and comprehensive instructions covering assembly and paint callouts.
This is a niche subject that will appeal to experienced modellers looking to add something different to a Sturmartillerie diorama or vehicle collection, rather than another mainstream tank kit.
