SdKfz 141 was the German army's ordnance inventory designation for the Panzer III, the medium tank that formed the backbone of the Panzerwaffe's armoured spearheads during the campaigns in Poland, France, the Balkans and the opening phase of Operation Barbarossa. Fast, mechanically reliable and progressively up-gunned as the war went on, it was the workhorse around which German panzer division tactics were built before the Panzer IV and later Panther took over as the primary battle tank.
