The M4A2 Sherman was the diesel-powered variant of America's standard medium tank, and it became the mount of choice for the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific theatre of operations. The "(W)" designation marks the improved wet-stowage hull, introduced in 1943, which surrounded the ammunition racks in a water-glycol solution to dramatically reduce the risk of catastrophic ammunition fires when the tank was penetrated — a crucial survivability upgrade for crews fighting through the close-range, ambush-prone terrain of islands such as Tarawa, Saipan and Iwo Jima.
