"Tank desant" was the Red Army practice of riflemen riding into the attack clinging to the hulls of T-34s and other armour, widely used from the Battle of Kursk through to the drive on Berlin. It dramatically increased infantry mobility but exposed the riders to enemy fire and shrapnel.
