The Lockheed Hudson emerged from the RAF's urgent need for a modern maritime patrol aircraft to complement the Avro Anson during the late 1930s. Impressed by Lockheed's proven expertise in twin-engined commercial aviation, the British Purchasing Commission selected the company's light bomber proposal in 1938.
Upon arrival in Britain, each aircraft received a characteristic Boulton Paul dorsal turret, enhancing its defensive capabilities. By 1939, the RAF had already integrated 78 Hudsons into operational service, establishing the type as a cornerstone of British maritime reconnaissance during the opening stages of the Second World War.
