Descended from the legendary Lancaster, the Avro Shackleton served as the RAF's primary long-range maritime patrol platform from 1951 onwards, powered by Rolls-Royce Griffon engines. The aircraft excelled in anti-submarine operations whilst fulfilling multiple secondary roles.
When HMS Ark Royal's decommissioning threatened naval airborne early warning capability, twelve Shackleton's were converted to AEW.2 standard, equipped with radar units from retired Fairey Gannets. These modified aircraft operated with No.8 Squadron at RAF Lossiemouth until 1991, representing the final four-engine propeller-driven bombers in RAF service.
This Airfix 1/72 scale model captures an aircraft whose operational longevity and versatility defined post-war British maritime aviation.
