Deployed by the RAF from 1960 onwards, the Lightning F.6 set a new standard for interceptor performance with its Mach 2+ capability and remarkable acceleration. This formidable fighter dominated the skies until the late 1980s, when it was succeeded by the Tornado. While the Lightning excelled in speed and climb performance, operational constraints, limited range and a modest two-missile loadout, presented tactical challenges that later variants attempted to address through additional fuel capacity. Several examples survive in museum collections, testament to its status as one of Britain's most potent supersonic fighters.
