Following the 1967 Six-Day War, the Israeli Defence Force captured Soviet T-55 tanks and extensively modified them into the formidable Tiran 5. These vehicles featured upgraded 105mm guns, mounted M2 heavy machine guns, and distinctive storage boxes for identification purposes. The Tiran 5 proved its combat effectiveness during the 1973 Yom Kippur War and remained in service through the early 1980s before seeing wider international deployment.
