The Macchi MC.202 Folgore (“Thunderbolt”) was one of the most effective Italian fighter aircraft of World War II. Entering service in 1941, it combined Italian aerodynamic elegance with the power of a German Daimler-Benz DB601 engine. The Folgore proved agile, fast, and reliable, giving Italian pilots the tools to compete with Allied fighters such as the Spitfire and P-40. It served extensively in North Africa, the Mediterranean, and on the Eastern Front, earning a reputation as the best Italian fighter of the war.
