The Grumman F-14 Tomcat, a supersonic, twin-engine fighter, was a key asset to U.S. Navy squadrons during the 1980s and 1990s. Distinguished by its variable-sweep wings, twin vertical stabilizers, and tandem two-seat cockpit, the Tomcat offered outstanding performance. Equipped with two General Electric afterburning turbofans, it reached speeds up to Mach 2.34. Its weaponry featured a 20 mm M61 Vulcan rotary cannon along with a range of missiles including the AIM-9 Sidewinder, AIM-7 Sparrow, and the radar-guided AIM-54 Phoenix for long-distance targets. Introduced in the 1970s to succeed the F-4 Phantom II, the F-14 achieved air superiority and participated in engagements such as the Gulf of Sirte crisis and the Iraq War.
