In the 1960s, the Israeli Ordnance Corps modernized their M4A1 Sherman tanks by fitting them with the formidable French 105mm CN-105-F1 gun, creating the M51 variant. To manage the increased recoil, a muzzle brake and a turret rear counterweight were added. Powered by a 460hp diesel engine, and equipped with Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension (HVSS) and wider T80 tracks, the M51 achieved enhanced mobility. During the 1967 Six-Day War, these tanks engaged advanced T-54/55 and JS-3 models from Egyptian, Iraqi, and Syrian forces, relying on HEAT rounds for combat effectiveness. The M51 remained in service until the early 1980s.
