Twelve launch tubes sit on an eight wheeled MAZ chassis.

Entering service in the late 1980s, Smerch, meaning whirlwind, is among the heaviest rocket artillery ever fielded and has been upgraded and exported to several armies. A full salvo of twelve rockets can be fired in under forty seconds, covering a wide area with submunitions at ranges far beyond tube artillery. Smerch systems have been used by Russia and by export customers, and the launcher served as the basis for later rocket systems.
