Production began at Shenyang in the mid 1950s, making it the first jet fighter manufactured in China, and it served the People's Liberation Army Air Force and Navy for decades as well as being exported to several allies. Its swept wing, afterburning engine and heavy cannon armament made it a capable day fighter, and Chinese J-5s saw combat over the Taiwan Strait in the late 1950s.
